A £1,500 PC can feel slower than a £900 one if the budget has gone into the wrong parts. That is the reason a custom pc buying guide should start with what you actually do at the computer, not with a list of the most expensive components available.

A well-planned custom PC gives you useful performance where it matters, sensible upgrade options and fewer compromises hidden behind a flashy case. Whether you are gaming after work, editing video, studying, running a small office or replacing an ageing family desktop, the right build is the one that suits your workload and your budget.

Start with the job your PC needs to do

The first question is simple: what will this machine spend most of its time doing? A PC for web browsing, documents, video calls and streaming does not need the same graphics card or cooling as a 1440p gaming system. Equally, a gaming PC is not automatically the right answer for someone working with large photographs, CAD files or video projects.

For everyday home and office use, prioritise a reliable modern processor, 16GB of memory and a fast solid-state drive. These parts make the system feel responsive when opening applications, switching between browser tabs and handling routine work. Spending heavily on a top-tier graphics card here usually adds little benefit.

For gaming, decide which games you play and the screen you already own or plan to buy. Competitive games such as Valorant, Fortnite and Rocket League can run very well on modest hardware, particularly at 1080p. Newer single-player games at high settings, ray tracing or 1440p and 4K resolutions put far more pressure on the graphics card.

For creative work, software matters. Video editing can benefit from a strong processor, plenty of memory, fast storage and, depending on the application, a capable graphics card. Music production may favour processor performance, quiet cooling and enough storage for sample libraries. There is no single specification that is best for every creative workload.

Custom PC buying guide: set a realistic budget

Set a complete budget before choosing individual components. Include the tower, monitor, keyboard, mouse, operating system and any extras you genuinely need. It is easy to spend the full amount on the PC itself, then discover that the old monitor limits the result more than the new hardware helps it.

As a rough rule, gaming builds should devote a meaningful share of the budget to the graphics card. This is usually the part that has the biggest effect on game frame rates. A workstation may need more of the budget directed towards processor cores, memory capacity and storage instead.

Avoid building around one premium component while cutting corners everywhere else. A powerful graphics card paired with too little memory, a small drive or a poor-quality power supply is not balanced. You do not need to buy the most expensive part in every category, but each component should be appropriate for the system around it.

Leave a little room for price changes and practical extras. Additional case fans, Wi-Fi, a larger SSD or a better power supply can be more valuable than a small increase in processor speed. If the budget is tight, choose the parts that are easy to upgrade later and avoid buying short-term compromises that will need replacing entirely.

Choose the parts in the right order

Start with the processor and graphics card, then select compatible supporting parts. This prevents a common mistake: choosing a motherboard or case first and trying to force the rest of the build around it.

Processor

The processor handles general computing work and supports the graphics card. For most users, a current mid-range processor offers very good value. More cores can help with rendering, virtual machines, heavy multitasking and some professional software, but they are not always necessary for gaming or routine office work.

Look at real performance for the applications you use rather than relying on brand names or clock speeds alone. A newer, well-priced processor can be a better choice than an older high-end model, especially when it gives you a more current motherboard platform and better future upgrade options.

Graphics card

For a gaming PC, buy the graphics card for your target resolution. A sensible 1080p card may be all you need for a standard 60Hz screen, while a high-refresh 1440p monitor needs more performance to make the most of it. Do not pay for 4K capability if you have no plan to use a 4K display.

Video memory also deserves attention, particularly with newer games and creative software. More is not automatically better, but too little can create stuttering or limit texture settings. Check the physical size of the card as well. Some larger models will not fit in compact cases.

Motherboard

Motherboards affect compatibility, connectivity and expansion, but a higher price does not automatically improve PC performance. Choose one that supports your processor, has enough memory slots, storage connections and USB ports, and includes Wi-Fi if you need it.

For most people, a sensible mid-range board is enough. Pay extra only for features you will use, such as more high-speed storage slots, additional networking, stronger power delivery for a high-end processor or specialist connections for work equipment.

Memory and storage

For a new general-purpose or gaming system, 16GB of RAM remains a practical baseline. Move to 32GB if you edit video, work with large files, run virtual machines, keep many applications open or simply want more headroom for demanding games. Buying memory as a matched kit is normally the safest route for compatibility and performance.

Use an NVMe SSD as the main drive where possible. It improves start-up times, game loading and day-to-day responsiveness compared with older mechanical hard drives. A 1TB drive is often a more comfortable starting point than 500GB once Windows, applications, games and updates are taken into account.

Hard drives still have a place for economical bulk storage, archives and backups. They are not the best choice for the main operating system drive in a new build. Important files should also be backed up separately. A larger PC does not protect data from accidental deletion, drive failure or ransomware.

Power supply, cooling and case

These parts are often treated as an afterthought. They should not be. A reputable power supply with enough capacity and the correct connectors helps protect the whole system. Very cheap units can be a false economy, particularly when supporting an expensive graphics card.

Cooling should match the processor and the case airflow. A good air cooler is enough for many builds and can be quieter and simpler than liquid cooling. Liquid coolers can be useful in specific high-performance or space-limited builds, but they are not compulsory.

Choose a case for airflow, component clearance and front ports before appearance. Glass panels and lighting are optional. Easy cable management, accessible dust filters and room for future upgrades make ownership less frustrating over time.

Check compatibility before ordering

Every component must work with the rest of the build. The processor socket must match the motherboard. The motherboard must support the chosen memory type. The case needs room for the graphics card, cooler and motherboard size. The power supply needs sufficient wattage and the correct connectors.

Firmware is another detail worth checking. Some motherboards may need a BIOS update before they support a particular processor. It is manageable, but it is better to know before the parts arrive than when the new PC will not start.

Also think about networking and ports. If the PC will sit far from the router, built-in Wi-Fi may be worthwhile. If you use external drives, cameras or audio equipment, count the USB and audio connections you need. Small details are often the ones that affect everyday use.

Do not forget the monitor and peripherals

Your monitor is the part you look at, so it has a direct effect on every session. For gaming, refresh rate, resolution and response time all matter. For photo work, colour accuracy and panel quality may be more useful than an extremely high refresh rate. A good monitor can remain with you through several PC upgrades.

Keyboard, mouse, headset and speakers are personal choices, but do not treat them as throwaway items. If you work or play for hours, comfort and reliability matter more than marketing features. Try to avoid spending so much on lighting and accessories that the core PC becomes underpowered.

Build it yourself or have it built?
